Priscilla was always ready for the unexpected. Much of her success in love and business had come from understanding that nothing could last forever. Things happened. People died. Meanwhile, she found strength, dignity, and a private sense of advantage of knowing that nothing could wholly surprise her. Until the very day she fell into the pond, at the age of 36, she was able to say with the poet, “Safe shall be my going, secretly armed against all death’s endeavor.” (To be continued)
